This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

  • The story of Judith and Holofernes comes from the Book of Judith, which is part of the Deuterocanonical books in the Bible. It tells the dramatic and heroic tale of Judith, a Jewish widow, who saves her people from the Assyrian general Holofernes. Holofernes is besieging the city of Bethulia, and Judith, in an act of bravery, enters the enemy camp, feigns submission, and ultimately beheads Holofernes in his sleep, returning with his head to her city. This act leads to the defeat of the Assyrian forces.

    Key Biblical Passage:
    Judith 13:8-10:
“Then Judith came to the bed, and she took the sword from its place. And she drew it out and said, ‘Give me the strength, O Lord God of Israel, to do this thing, so that I may bring great vengeance upon this man and his army.’ And she struck with all her might, and cut off his head at the base of the neck. Then she took it and put it in the bag, and gave it to her maid.”

This passage highlights Judith's courage and faith in God, and her willingness to act decisively to save her people, with her triumph being a moment of divine intervention.

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Dalí’s surreal depiction, the powerful and sacred nature of the event would be conveyed through abstract forms, melting figures, and divine symbolism. Judith’s act of courage and faith would be at the center of the painting, with the surrealist techniques adding a layer of psychological complexity and spiritual depth to this dramatic moment.
