The Liturgy of Penance is a liturgical act in Christian tradition where a believer seeks forgiveness from God for sins committed. It is primarily based on the concept of repentance, which involves expressing remorse for one’s sins, asking for forgiveness, and committing to avoid those sins in the future. While it is not a specific biblical passage, it draws from various parts of the Bible that emphasize repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God.
Key biblical themes of repentance can be seen in:
Psalm 51, where David asks for forgiveness after his sin with Bathsheba.
Luke 15:11-32, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, in which a lost son repents and is welcomed back by his father.
2 Corinthians 5:18-19, which speaks of reconciliation between God and humanity through Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:9, which states that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Dalí’s surreal depiction would be conveyed through dreamlike imagery, with fluid forms, glowing light, and abstract symbolism. The painting would capture the emotional depth of repentance and the mystical nature of divine forgiveness, showing how the inner transformation of the soul unfolds through divine grace and spiritual restoration.
