Book of Tobit, Tobit 5:4-6:22
The story of Saint Raphael and Tobias appears in the Book of Tobit, which is part of the Deuterocanonical books of the Bible. Saint Raphael is an archangel who is sent by God to help Tobit and his son Tobias. Tobias, following his father’s instructions to retrieve money from a distant city, is guided by Raphael on his journey. Along the way, Tobias encounters several challenges, including being attacked by a fish in a river. Raphael, in disguise, advises Tobias on how to use the fish’s heart, liver, and gall to heal his father’s blindness and protect his journey.
The archangel’s role is both guide and healer, and the story highlights themes of divine assistance, faith, and divine providence. Raphael ultimately reveals his true identity to Tobias and his family, proclaiming that he has been sent by God to help and deliver them from harm.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Dalí’s interpretation, " the focus would be on the mystical and divine aspects of the story, with surreal imagery symbolizing divine intervention, guidance, and the miraculous healing process. The use of light, fluid time, and disjointed landscapes would create a dream-like narrative, emphasizing the otherworldly nature of Tobias’s journey and the power of faith and divine protection.
