This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

In the biblical story of Lot’s wife, the moment of transformation happens as the family flees from the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The angels had urged them to flee for their lives and warned them not to look back as the cities were being destroyed by fire and brimstone from God. While Lot and his daughters obeyed, Lot’s wife defied the command and looked back at the burning cities. As a result, she was immediately transformed into a pillar of salt.

This transformation into a pillar of salt serves as a powerful and eerie symbol of disobedience and longing for the past. Her action of looking back signifies a reluctance to let go of the life she knew in Sodom—a life that was full of corruption and sin. The salt symbolizes a permanent, frozen state, signifying the consequences of disobedience to God’s commands.

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí  would not merely show the physical change into a pillar of salt. Instead, it would focus on the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the story, using surrealist techniques to explore themes of longing, regret, and the consequences of disobedience. The frozen state of the pillar of salt would serve as a timeless reminder of the dangers of turning back from divine guidance and the cost of disobedience in the face of God's command.
